This semester we will initially meet in LL-206.

LL-206 is the classroom that is directly across from the Reference Desk at Palomar's San Marcos location. We have arranged for a sign to be posted on the door of the 'wrong' classroom NS-312.

Beginning Wednesday January 27th the class will meet in LL-109.

Unfortunately the college has not posted the correct classroom information for LT110. This semester we will initially meet in LL-206.

What's in store for Spring 2010 and LT110

Hello Everyone:

January 20, 2010 is almost here!

That will be the first day our class meets. This edition of LT110 will have some major changes.

The first will be the transition from Chris Reeske teaching the course to having me, Marlene Forney, as your Instructor. While I am new to this class at Palomar I have substantial experience in this aspect of the profession and the subject area. I worked in the library Technical Services areas for 10 years. In addition I taught courses to Library Technician students for over 6 years.

The second major change is the use of new textbook. The required text will be The Organization of Information (Library and Information Science Text Series) by Arlene G. Taylor, 3rd edition, 2008.

I look forward to helping guide your learning experience in Palomar's Library Technician program, specifically your learning about Technical Services: Collection Management, Cataloging, etc.

LT110 - Library Operational Skills / Technical Services

LT110 is an introduction to the principles and practices of technical services including cataloging and acquisitions, bindery and serials control. Topics covered during the semester include the Dewey Decimal system, Library of Congress classification system, Sears Subject Headings and LC Subject Headings, bibliographic entry searching and verification, acquisitions tools and techniques and automation of library systems. This course is required to earn an Advanced Certificate and/or the Associate of Arts in Library Technology. It is also transferable to the California State University system.

After completing this course students will be able to:

1- understand the functions of Cataloging and Acquisitions departments
2- create cataloging recording using tools such as AACR2R and MARC 21
3- use cataloging records in bibliographic utilities and local catalogs
